Severe acne is generally seen in four different forms. Severe acne occurs as acne fulminans, gram negative folliculitis, nodulocystic acne and also acne conglobata. In all the cases, the condition of the skin is characterized by severe inflammation on the skin and also the occurrence of abscesses and extensive formation of blackheads and other lumps on the skin.

For treating such condition of severe acne usage of chemicals and antibiotics is used. Antibiotic called isotretinoin is widely used to treat acne conglobata and the treatment may be extended for several weeks. Other non steroidal anti inflammatory medications are also used to treat conditions like acne fulminans and regular checkups are prescribed in such cases to check the recurrence of such skin disorders.

In case of nodulocystic acne, the treatment is quite aggressive and may include usage of isotretinoin and antibiotics. In this case, the cyst needs to be melted in the treatment process. In some cases, the treatment of drainage is applied to treat large cysts. In gram negative folliculitis, antibiotics are used to treat and remove the effect of the bacteria that causes the acne. Other chemicals like isotretinoin may also be used in the treatment process as the bacteria are quite resistant to treatment.
